Pascoe Seeking Sweet Success in NSSS

13/12/08…NASR/SSA Media Release

Two years ago, Queensland’s Matt Pascoe was a talented racecar driver unable to secure a full-time ride that could showcase his abilities behind the wheel to maximum effect.  However, in a very short period of time, Pascoe has not only established himself as one of Australia’s leading speedway drivers, but he is also widely regarded as one of Australia’s pre-eminent Super Sedan chassis constructors.  With experience in a variety of race categories and having spent time in America working with tin top legend Steve Francis, Pascoe has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that he will use to good effect as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

Pascoe started his racing career as a 15-year-old in the Limited Sprintcar division, finishing fifth in his first ever feature race despite starting from the rear of the field.  He subsequently moved into the Modified Production division, which proved the catalyst for him to try his hand at racecar construction.  The Mazda RX7 that resulted proved very successful, carrying Pascoe to a runner-up finish in the 1999 Queensland Modified Production Championship in Moranbah, which was followed by a third-place finish the following year in Bundaberg.

Having secured some assistance from Mazda devotee Ian Boettcher during the construction of his RX7, Pascoe was offered a job in the newly formed Ian Boettcher Race Parts chassis workshop and subsequently constructed the first ever Dominator Super Sedan.  He also constructed the car used by Darren Kane to win the Australian Championship and the car used by Francis on his last Australian tour. It was this association that led to Pascoe spending 10 weeks in America as part of Francis’ World of Outlaws Late Model team.

Upon returning from America, Pascoe linked with Brisbane-based Dirt Modified competitor Keith Muller and was afforded the opportunity to drive the car whenever business commitments prevented Muller from being able to race.  Although only racing sporadically, Pascoe made a significant impact on the category, winning the feature race in his first ever meeting.  Later that season, he upstaged many of the established stars by finishing third in the Australian Dirt Modified Championship at Lismore Speedway.

Looking to utilise his manufacturing skills, Pascoe created Sweet chassis and enjoyed immediate success. In his first meeting aboard the first ever Sweet chassis constructed, Steve Jordan finished fifth in the feature without any prior testing.  Jordan went on to win the prestigious Apple Isle Grand Prix and a round of the National Super Sedan Series before securing a runner-up finish in the Australian Super Sedan Championship last year in Mildura

Whilst Pascoe’s 2007/2008 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series campaign was a somewhat disjointed affair hampered by engine breakages and other setbacks, there were plenty of highlights throughout the tournament.  In round three at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway, Pascoe qualified on the front row, only to have an engine breakage prevent him from taking his place on the grid. Resigned to missing round four in Mildura while a new engine was sourced, Pascoe was called upon to substitute for an injured Jordan.  Starting 19th, he surged through the field to finish 9th and pick up the Sport Engines Hard Charger Award. He finished 13th the following night at Avalon, finished 5th in round six at Hamilton and then secured his best result of the series at Moun t Gambier with a runner-up finish behind series champion Michael Doblo.

So far this season, Pascoe has been in sensational form, teaming with Australian Champion Jamie McHugh to win the two 30/30 Super Sedan races staged on consecutive weekends in Toowoomba and Lismore. In the unique twin feature format, the pair led throughout all four 30-lap segments of the event in an emphatic performance.  Pascoe also raced to a runner-up finish in the New South Wales Super Sedan Championship at Gunnedah Speedway.

Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Matt Pascoe as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
