Pagel Doubles Up with Rockhampton Win

Continuing his superb start to the season, Gympie’s Mark Pagel has taken out round three of the 2016/2017 Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series at Rockhampton Speedway on Saturday night (October 29). Having won the opening round and finishing second in round two, Pagel pounced in Rockhampton to lead every circulation of the 30-lap feature event to extend his championship lead.
Round two winner Steve Jordan chased Pagel for more than 20 laps before Wayne Randall advanced to secure a runner-up finish, with Ian Brims also slipping ahead of Jordan to snare third spot. Gavin Northfield was the best of the locals in fifth position ahead of David O’Keefe and John Sheehan, with Brendan Doyle the only other finisher.
Pagel started his night the way he ended it, taking out the first heat ahead of Glenn Knox and Jack Childs.
Jordan also staked an early claim in his bid for consecutive round wins, taking out heat two ahead of Northfield and Doyle.
Heat three saw Randall romp home for an emphatic win, finishing more than nine seconds clear of Jordan, with Knox third.
David O’Keefe outpaced Pagel to win heat four, with Nicholas O’Keefe annexing third on this occasion.
Northfield gave the locals plenty to cheer about when he led home Doyle in a home-town quinella in heat five, relegating Pagel to third.
Randall and Jordan clashed again in the final heat and whilst it was Randall who prevailed again, it was Jordan who finished as top qualifier. Another third-place result from Knox was enough to secure fifth overall prior to the Penrite Grid Draw for the main event presented by Barnes Drilling.
Unfortunately for Knox, his feature race ended on lap 10 whilst running inside the top five, joining Childs and Nicholas O’Keeffe on the infield, both of whom had exited on lap seven. Bob McCosker became the final retiree on lap 11, leaving eight cars to complete the remaining laps. Not surprisingly, Pagel cut the quickest lap of the race, but Northfield was the only other driver to drop under 16 seconds for a lap of the showground oval and even thought there was just 2.11 seconds between them at the chequer, Northfield still found himself fifth behind Randall, Brims and Jordan in a very close result.
Round four of the 2016/2107 Think Money Super Sedan Championship Series will be decided at Toowoomba Speedway this Saturday night (November 5) as part of Ultimate Pink Night.
