Super Sedans Back in Brisbane
10/10/07…SSA Media Release
After a slow start to the season, the Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Super Sedan Championship hots up this weekend with a stronger field – in both quality and quantity – set to lock horns at Brisbane International Speedway on Saturday night (October 13).
Round three of the season-long series has attracted nominations from 16 drivers from throughout Queensland and New South Wales, with series leader Jamie McHugh leading the charge. After finishing third in the opening round in Brisbane two weeks ago, McHugh dominated round two in Toowoomba last weekend to establish a narrow points advantage over Ian Brims.
With sedan legend John Leslight turning the wrenches on the #76 Monte Carlo, Ian Brims has been a revelation in the opening two rounds, finishing in second spot on both occasions to occupy the same position in the overall standings. Defending series champion and opening round winner Wayne Brims finished third in Toowoomba and he also sits third overall in what is currently a three-way scrap for the championship.
However, this weekend promises to be the most competitive round thus far with several drivers joining the fray for the first time this season, including former national champ Darren Kane. Piloting his Custom Transporters and Trailers Dodge, Kane is perhaps the man most likely to upstage the leading trio in what is a welcome return from illness for the transplanted Tasmanian.
Of course, comeback driver Craig McGeorge is another expected to challenge for outright honours. McGeorge sits fourth overall in points ahead of Barry Craft and Steve Pearce, both of whom will also be amongst the starters. Trevor Brehmer – also making a return to competition this season aboard an ex-Brims Camaro – and veteran Chris Albert are currently inside the top ten and both will be in action again this weekend.
Others making their first appearance for the season are Alan Robertson, Steve Van Zeeland, Colin Moss and Mackay’s Des Korn. Also amongst the nominations are Rodney Craft, Alan Williams and Maurie Williams.
Racing gets underway at 6.00pm.
