Korn Commits to National Campaign
Korn Commits to National Campaign…26/10/06…NASR/ASCF Media Release
Over the last few years, it is unlikely that anybody has travelled more miles along Australia’s highways in search of Super Sedan action than Queensland’s Des Korn. Now residing in Mackay in the north of the state, Korn has not allowed the tyranny of distance to serve as a hindrance in his efforts to partake in elite level speedway competition across Australia. For Korn, taking part in a ‘local’ Super Sedan Association event each weekend can involve a 10-hour drive in each direction. With such an unwavering passion for the sport in the face of such adversity it is no surprise that Des Korn has been confirmed as a contracted driver with the 2006/2007 National Super Sedan Series.
Korn started his racing career 30 years ago in Gladstone and enjoyed tremendous success throughout the central Queensland region with a multitude of feature race victories and track championships, including a win in the prestigious Rebel 1000 event at Bundaberg’s Carina Speedway. After 17 years of racing, he stepped out of the cockpit to focus on the relocation of his transport business from Gladstone to Dysart.
Since returning to competition eight years ago, Korn has been a regular fixture at every major Super Sedan event in Australia, accumulating a solid record of success along the way. Included amongst his litany of results are third-place finishes in the prestigious East Coast Grand National at Lismore Speedway and the Western Australian Super Sedan Championship at Kalgoorlie Speedway. Korn has also featured prominently in the results of the ultra-competitive Super Sedan Association Championship Series each season, regularly finishing on the podium. During both the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons, Korn finished inside the top ten in the SSA points despite missing several rounds. Already this season, Korn has again been one of the stars in the early rounds of the SSA championship. In the two events held so far, Korn has passed more cars than any other competitor, overcoming qualifying misfortunes to surge from the rear of the field and into the top ten on both occasions.
In the inaugural National Super Sedan Series last season, Korn started strongly with a 6th-place finish in the opening round and then backed up with 12th overall in the difficult conditions of Moama’s Heartland Raceway. Unfortunately, the next three rounds proved fruitless and frustrating as he fell victim to a series of incidents, including a spectacular pile-up during round five in Brisbane. It was illness that ultimately curtailed his series campaign though, preventing him from taking part in the final and relegating him 13th overall in the championship.
Possessing one of the most professionally presented racing operations in the category – encompassing two cars, a mountain of spares and an imposing Mack transporter in which to ferry the equipment and crew to each round – along with some new found freedom as a result of a major restructure of his business operations, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Des Korn as a contracted driver in the 2006/2007 National Super Sedan Series.
Other drivers confirmed for the 2006/2007 series include: Wayne Randall, John Leslight, Brad Smith, Lucas Roberts, Michael Gee, Dave Gartner, Steve Vaughan,Paddy Ward, Bill Miller,Wayne Belk,Tony Barklimore
