Brims Heads Strong Masters Field
28/11/07…SSA Media Release
The first blue ribbon event of the Queensland Super Sedan season will be staged this weekend with the running of the 50 Lap Masters at Charlton Raceway on Saturday night (December 1). The event, which doubles as round seven of the Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Championship Series, has attracted the strongest field of the season thus far with more than 20 drivers set to do battle.
Fresh from his emphatic win in the New South Wales Super Sedan Championship last weekend, series leader Wayne Brims heads into the event as the clear favourite, despite the presence of some heavy hitters in the field. Seeking his fifth feature race win for the year, Brims will be looking to expand his points advantage.
Having won the previous round in Brisbane, Jamie McHugh is again expected to emerge as one of the major challengers as he desperately seeks to narrow the gap in the chase for championship honours. McHugh is the only other driver to visit victory lane in SSA feature race competition so far this season and is always a strong performer at the Toowoomba circuit.
However, making his first home state appearance for the season will be current Australian Super Sedan champion Michael Gee. Despite the late start to the season, Gee was the most dominant driver in the country throughout the second half of last season and, with a team renowned for meticulous preparation, he will be very confident of snatching the cash in the feature event.
Victorian champion Paddy Ward is also amongst the starters and he cannot be discounted after some excellent results last season during the National Super Sedan Series. Joining Ward on the trek north is fellow Orange-based competitor Lachlan Onley. With two feature race wins to his name already this season and having qualified on the front row at the NSW state title last weekend, Onley may well upstage his more illustrious rivals.
Others expected to feature prominently in the field include former national champ Darren Kane, Ian Brims, Craig McGeorge, Steve Pearce, Des Korn, Geoff Phillips, Peter Warren and Victoria’s Ashley Bergmeier. Brims and Bergmeier finished inside the top five in the NSW title, McGeorge sits fourth overall in the series standings and Phillips qualified on the front row at the previous round while Korn, Pearce and Warren have all featured on the podium already this season.
Also in the field are Allan Robertson, Wayne Miles, Paul Geary, Barry Craft, Tania Smith, Rodney Craft, Colin Moss and Toowoomba’s own Lenny Black, who will be making his first appearance for the season.
With a big support program that includes Modified Productions, AMCA Nationals and Litre Sprintcars, a great night seems assured. Gates open at 2.30pm and early racing gets underway at 3.30pm, with Super Sedans scheduled to hit the track at 5.40pm.
