New South Wales Super Sedan champion Wayne Brims scored a thrilling victory in the opening round of the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series, executing a late-race pass on Matt Pascoe to snatch victory in a highly entertaining 35-lap feature race at Brisbane International Speedway.

In a race described by track promoter John Kelly as the best Super Sedan race he has ever seen, Brims slipped his Brims Transport Pontiac underneath Pascoe with three laps remaining to secure an early points advantage in the championship chase.

Pascoe (Duce Windows and Doors Dodge) was valiant in defeat, having assumed the front running on lap five with an outside swoop around pole qualifier Gary Pagel (Southside 4×4 Dodge) immediately after a restart on lap five.  Pascoe surged clear of the field, establishing a lead of almost half a lap at one stage, only to have his advantage negated by a final restart with six laps remaining.  Brims pounced at the resumption, surging to the front and edging out Pascoe in a thrilling finish.

Queensland champion Darren Kane (Ian Boettcher Race Parts Mazda) started alongside Pagel on the front row and the duo engaged in a fantastic race-long scrap that also included Tasmania’s Jarrod Harper that proved the highlight of the race, race three-wide at times in a terrific display.  Pagel ultimately finished in fourth spot, with Harper annexing fifth.

Australian champ Jamie McHugh advanced from position eight to finish sixth, with defending champ Michael Doblo securing seventh spot ahead of Ian Brims, Michael Nicola, Ron Pyne and Super Sedan rookie Michael Halley, who was the last car on the lead lap in an impressive initiation to NSSS competition.

Lachlan Onley, Dave Gartner, Bill Miller, Dale Christensen, Shane Best and Daniel Miller completed the finishers, with Michael Hickey and Steve Pearce the only starters from the 19-car field who failed to go the distance.
