01/12/08…NASR/SSA Media Release
Michael Nicola needs no introduction to Australian speedway fans. As a three-time Australian Super Sedan champion, Nicola is quite rightly regarded as one of Australia’s finest ever Super Sedan exponents. In fact, Nicola is one of only three drivers to have won the national title on three occasions. Having also won five state championships over a 10-year period, this season will see Nicola once again chasing the one major championship to thus far elude him, the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

The Traralgon-based hard charger possesses a never-say-die attitude on the racetrack and his penchant for using the outside of the circuit to round up his rivals has made him a popular figure with race fans. His memorable performance in the 2007/2008 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series Grand Final at Murray Bridge Speedway is a perfect example of his hard charging style. Starting at the back of the grid after qualifying through the B main, Nicola stormed through the field, swooping into third spot in the closing stages.

Nicola emerged from the shadow of fellow Victorian Peter Logue when he won the 1997/1998 Australian Super Sedan Championship at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway. He finished third behind Ron Pyne the following year in Mount Gambier and then emphatically proved his home state victory was no fluke with back-to-back wins at Albany (WA) in 2001/2002 and Parramatta (NSW) in 2002/2003.

Nicola has remained the dominant figure within the Victorian Super Sedan ranks for 10 years, although much of his racing has been interstate chasing all the major events on the national calendar. In addition to his national title success, Nicola has won both the Victorian and New South Wales titles on two occasions and has also won a South Australian championship. Furthermore, he has accumulated eight runner-up finishes in state title competition across five states (SA, QLD, WA, NSW and VIC). Nicola has also won the prestigious Apple Isle Grand Prix, Australia’s richest Super Sedan event, in what has been a stellar career thus far.

With the unprecedented depth of talent within the Super Sedan division across Australia in recent seasons, Nicola certainly hasn’t enjoyed a success strike rate akin to which he has been familiar. However, he remains a potent force whenever he takes to the track, as evidenced by his results so far this season which include a feature race win at Avalon Raceway and a runner-up result in the Murray Gegg Memorial 30/30 Super Sedan feature race in Toowoomba last weekend.

As a driver with an outstanding record of success and some very strong form already this season, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Michael Nicola as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

01/12/08…NASR/SSA Media Release
Having been a sponsor of the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series since it began, Wayne Randall has again extended his support of the series with a continuation of the Shock Doctor Lucky Sevens contingency award scheme. Whilst Randall – the only two-time champion in the history of the series – is only taking part in selected events on the 2008/2009 schedule, the Lucky Sevens Award will be up for grabs at all ten rounds of the expanded competition.

As an authorised AFCO and Pro Shocks repairer, Shock Doctor can provide a comprehensive service that includes testing, diagnosing, repairing and re-valving of all AFCO and Pro Shocks shock absorbers. With access to enormous amounts of data courtesy of their status as an approved AFCO and Pro Shocks repairer, the Shock Doctor can offer extensive testing and diagnosis capabilities that enables an accurate evaluation of which parts may need to be replaced to maintain maximum efficiency. Such detailed assessment also ensures that competitors have a solid understanding of their shock absorber performance. Of course, Shock Doctor use only genuine replacement parts, making them the first choice in shock absorber repairs and service.

As a long-time competitor, Randall is acutely aware of the increasing costs associated with Super Sedan racing and is keen to ensure that there are prizes and incentives on offer for those competitors who may not necessarily finish at the front of the field at each round. At each round of the series, Shock Doctor will be sponsoring the Lucky Seven’s Award, with the driver who finishes seventh in each feature race picking up a full service and repair package on any two AFCO or Pro Shocks shock absorbers valued at more than $150.00. The Lucky Seven’s Award is a significant gesture that will ensure all drivers have plenty of incentive to attend as many rounds as possible.

Although not chasing the entire series schedule this season, Randall is hoping to contest selected rounds for Tasmanian-based car owner Steve Jessop. Randall has indicated that the team will probably take part in the Tri-City Series that will comprise rounds 5,6 and 7 of the NSSS at Hamilton (January 9), Mount Gambier (January 10) and Warrnambool (January 11). His inclusion in the field will certainly bolster what is already shaping as an incredibly strong gathering of tin top talent.

The Shock Doctor can repair and re-valve any AFCO or Pro Shocks alloy shock absorber for Super Sedans, Sprintcars, Dirt Modifieds and virtually any open wheel or sedan category in Australia, with set-up confidentiality assured at all times. For more information about the range of quality services available at Shock Doctor, contact Wayne Randall by phoning (07) 3297 1284 or fax (07) 3297 1294.

The 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series is proudly supported by the following sponsors:

All the results and lap times from last nights racing at Maryborough have been uploaded to http://qsca.mylaps.com (there is also a link on the QSCA Links page which navigates you to the correct page).

Full results points, times and placings for the AMT Super Street Sedan Series Round 2, Midget Speedcar National Series and the Formua 500 Qld Stampede Series Rnd 3 are available.

As well as this there were some Street Sedans and Junior Street Sedans who also chose to have their lap times recorded and these are loaded up as part of the AMT Super Street Series link. Note only a limited number of cars ran transponders in these two divisions so not full results are available.

Due to the extreme lateness of the nights racing and the desire by the Maryborough Sporting Car Club to not run over their finishing time by too much the Super Street Sedan A Main was declared after only 3 Laps had been completed.

As per Rule No 4.24.2 (a) on Page 22 - “If a feature race is declared with less than one-half of the scheduled laps completed, all prizemoney and series points will be divided equally amongst all starters.”, the prizemoney was paid out accordingly and the series points will be allocated in line with this rule.

20/11/08…Pam Franz…courtesy of Paul Vella, Promotional Officer, Gympie Saloon Car Club

She has the reputation of the toughest speedway track to tame in Australia and Saturday night she lived up to her name. Mothar Mountain Speedway opened her gates to over 130 race cars, including 26 Modified Production monsters for the 2nd rond of the G & W Racing Modified Production Series and nearly as many Junior Sedans for the Performax International debut series Round 1.

Nine heats of Modified Production cars provided the expected thrills and spills that many came to enjoy, rollovers and panels flying a plenty. After two heat wins and a second place, we saw local talent Gavin Lorensen on pole for a 30 lap A Main event with current Australia No 1 defender Todd Doyle and NSW Champion Steve Price side by side lurking out of row three.

Lights gone green kept the crowd cheering for the whole 30 laps and it was a case of ‘Dad can I borrow the keys to the car’ which saw Mark Raymont greeting the chequered flag in his Dad’s (Greg) Cooroy Auto Wreckers Falcon closely followed by his younger brother Aidan in the sister Falcon.

Our Junior Sedans had their hands full with a challenging track surface with 13 cars lined up for the A Main Brisbane hero Charlie Brown had three heat wins and led the way off pole for the 15 lap A Main event but was sent o the rear of field early in the event providing the crowd with a fantastic spectacle, a comeback that eventuated in a race win. Local Junior Sedan drivers Stephen English, Michael and Brendan Learoyd finished 5th, 7th & 8th respectively.

Support programs for the night saw Michael Roza winning Super Street Sedans, Kristian Walker proving too good in the Street Sedans, young star Mitchell Thomsen claiming victory in the Junior Street Sedans and Paul Redman making his mark in the 4 Cylinder Sedans.

‘It was the biggest night the club has hosted at the Mountain in years, the track was unforgiving and proved a challenge for even the most experienced drivers. No doubt there will be many driver and crews (including myself), scratching our heads wondering where to start with repairs.’

As usual, volunteers and organisers made the night a fantastic spectacle, we look forward to your company on December 13th for another massive night of speedway action featuring V8 Methanol Super Sedan action and a full support program.

20/11/08…NASR/SSA Media Release

Committed to ensuring that his racing is always fun, South Australia’s Bill Miller is a popular figure amongst sedan fans and competitors alike and is widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in Australian speedway. In fact, Miller’s larrikin nature and reputation as a good bloke sometimes overshadow the incredible amount of success he has enjoyed behind the wheel of his trusty pink Pontiac. As a pivotal figure within South Australia’s Super Sedan ranks for many years as a sponsor and administrator as well as a competitor, series organisers are pleased to confirm Bill Miller as a contracted driver with the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

However, it isn’t just a unique colour scheme that makes Miller such a recognisable figure on the South Australian speedway landscape, it is perhaps more likely the fact that he habitually finishes near the front of the field whenever a Super Sedan event is staged in South Australia. If not making one of his regular visits to victory lane, you can be sure that Miller will be somewhere on the podium or lurking ominously in pursuit of the leaders when the chequer falls. So far this season, Miller has scored two top-five finishes in feature race competition at Adelaide’s Speedway City circuit.

Miller has never been afraid to traverse Australia in search of the best competition at the biggest events and, despite not possessing the budget enjoyed by so many of his rivals, he has been an avid supporter of the National Super Sedan Series from the outset. In the inaugural series, Miller overcame some significant setbacks to finish tenth overall. The following season, Miller was again on track for a top ten finish in the expanded series until a disappointing final round at Murray Bridge relegated him to 16th in the series standings. Last season Miller finished 17th overall, his best result coming in the penultimate round at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway with a 5th-place finish.

Although yet to strike gold on the national trail, Miller has enjoyed an incredible run of success in his home state since making the transition from Formula 500’s to Super Sedans via a stint in the Speedcar ranks. Miller’s dominance of the South Australian scene has included an unprecedented seven consecutive wins in the local Club Championship. He also took out the 2006/2007 South Australian Championship, having finished on the podium on three previous occasions (1998/1999, 2001/2002 and 2002/2003).

Miller’s success certainly hasn’t been restricted to the local scene though as the 1999/2000 season saw him snare a fine third-place finish in the Australian Super Sedan Championship in Hobart, while the 2004/2005 season saw Miller score the same result in the Victorian Championship at Mildura’s Timmis Speedway.

Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Bill Miller as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

19/11/08…NASR/ASCF Media Release

Brett Hignett has been a regular on the NSW Super Sedan scene for many years and recent seasons have seen the Narromine-based speedster emerge as a genuine contender at major blue ribbon and championship events around Australia. After being forced to miss the 2007/2008 series following an early season crash, Hignett is back amongst the contracted driver line-up 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

Having started his speedway career as a 16-year-old in Division 3 Sedans, Hignett has spent more than 15 years in dirt track competition, including 10 years in the Super Sedan ranks. During this time he has accumulated more than 20 feature race wins at various tracks throughout New South Wales. One standout moment took place at Dubbo Speedway during the 2003/2004 season when he stormed to victory after qualifying on the front row alongside three-time Australian champion Ron Pyne. Hignett has won Club Championships at both Dubbo and Gilgandra and has accrued an impressive record of success since the inception of the New South Wales Super Sedan Series. The 2004/2005 season saw Hignett finish fourth in the New South Wales Super Sedan Championship at Gilgandra

In addition to his performances at regional NSW venues, Hignett has also made regular trips interstate to contest blue ribbon events. During the 2005/2006 Australian Super Sedan Championship at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway, Hignett finished inside the top ten, an excellent performance that propelled him into the national consciousness.

Hignett contested the 2006/2007 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series, collecting three top-ten results on the way to finishing 13th overall in the championship. Plans to chase the series again in 2007/2008 were curtailed following a serious crash that destroyed his ex-Darren Kane Mazda RX8 and left him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.

This season, Hignett returns to NSSS competition aboard a brand new Dodge Avenger from Matt Pascoe’s Sweet workshop and he will be looking to make amends. In his first outing aboard his new mount, Hignett finished in second spot behind fellow NSSS pilot Tony Barklimore in the opening round of the New South Wales Super Sedan Series. Last night at Gilgandra Speedway, Hignett went one better and blitzed the field to win round two of the series in a perfect warm-up for his NSSS campaign.

With a wealth of experience, strong form and a determination to overcome the challenges await is such a gruelling schedule, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Brett Hignett as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.

13/11/08…NASR/SSA Media Release

Following his brilliant late surge to victory in the 2007/2008 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series, Queensland’s Michael Doblo has confirmed that he will be hitting the road to defend his title in 2008/2009. The former Queensland champion clinched the 2007/2008 NSSS championship with a stunning finish that started with a 3rd-place finish during round five and culminated with three consecutive feature race victories.

Having won rounds six and seven at Hamilton and Mount Gambier, Doblo headed into the final round at Murray Bridge just 28 points behind New South Welshman Wayne Brims. In a perfectly calculated and executed performance, Doblo stormed to victory in the series finale to emerge with the championship in his first attempt.

Whilst many so-called experts refused to endorse Doblo as a serious contender prior to the series getting underway, his performance throughout the latter half of the championship was faultless. Tempering his usual flamboyant style behind the wheel, Doblo exuded patience and precision on his way to upstaging some very big hitters of the national Super Sedan scene.

Hailing from the Super Sedan stronghold of Rockhampton in central Queensland, Doblo is no stranger to championship success, winning the Queensland Championship at Maryborough Speedway in 2000/2001. Given his performance last season, it is a certainty that Doblo will never be underestimated or overlooked again when it comes to identifying potential series winners from amongst the 15+ contracted drivers.

Joining Doblo on tour once again this season will be Ocean Tyres teammate Chris Bussey. Perhaps even more so than is partner, Bussey was a revelation during the 2007/2008 tournament. In his comeback season after a lengthy layoff, Bussey finished an amazing fifth overall in very illustrious company. Despite visiting many of the series venues for the very first time, Bussey was consistently on the pace and refused to be overwhelmed or intimidated by the challenges that the NSSS invariably throws up.

With a two-car team that exudes professionalism and presentation of the highest standards, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Michael Doblo and Chris Bussey as contracted drivers in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
